PCR tests: BVD (Cattle)

Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cattle. It leads to severe economic losses due to reduced fertility, immunosuppression, and increased calf mortality. Farmlab’s PCR test for BVD is an important tool for Irish farmers to diagnose and manage this disease effectively.

The PCR test identifies the presence of BVD virus in blood, tissue, or milk samples, allowing for early detection of infected animals. Early identification is crucial for controlling the spread of the virus within herds, particularly when it comes to persistently infected (PI) animals that act as reservoirs for the virus.

Our PCR test is highly sensitive and specific, providing accurate results that help in making informed management decisions. Testing in Ireland is carried out in accordance with the National BVD Eradication programme (www.animalhealthireland.ie), helping farmers to improve herd health and productivity.
