PCR Tests: Ovine Abortion (Sheep)

Ovine abortion, caused by pathogens such as Chlamydia, Toxoplasma, and Campylobacter, is a significant issue affecting flock productivity. Farmlab’s PCR test accurately detects the presence of these pathogens, allowing for rapid diagnosis and effective management of abortion outbreaks in sheep. Sampling for this test is straightforward, taking a piece of the placenta ( the cotyledon or “buttons”) and submitting it to the lab in a suitable sealed container. Care should be taken to ensure samples are appropriately packaged in accordance with UN3373 guidelines

Early detection through PCR testing can help farmers implement control measures such as vaccination, improved biosecurity, and targeted treatments, significantly reducing the impact on the flock. This test is vital for maintaining the health and reproductive efficiency of ewes, particularly during critical breeding and lambing seasons.
